I’m really sad on behalf of journalism these days. I know this is some shitty small town newsroom with no market and nothing to report on, but it’s still everything that’s become wrong with news.
There’s three branches of the government that are supposed to check and balance each other, but they don’t, so citizens made a fourth and started asking questions and writing shit down and calling people out. When your editor says, “Someone shit on the bank. There was pee and poop all over it. Go check it out,” you’re not supposed to immediately take a side and admonish the first people you come across at the scene. You’re supposed to say, “Holy shit I live in a bullshit town, I should work hard making this story interesting, put it on my reel and get the fuck out of here.”
CSU played CU in football. CU always beat CSU. Somehow CSU pulled it off and won the game. The fans cheered and some tried to get on the field, but didn’t, they were sprayed directly with pepper spray, which seems legitimate to me. But the police were suddenly in riot gear. They launched tear gas canisters into the CSU stands.
If you’ve ever been to any sort of large venue, you know that you can’t just leave. You have to wait for other people to leave to leave. It’s like getting off a plane. So there’s these fans, next to this tear gas canister, not being able to get away. One fan picked it up and threw it back on the field. Bad ass. Everyone cheered. I was there and it was great. Did the police use too much force? Maybe. If I were a journalist, I would have asked around. What got reported on the news that night? That CSU students rioted in the stadium and threw things at the cops. Cut to footage of the fan throwing a tear gas canister onto the field. Nice reporting.
Do I think the police told the journalist how to report that story? Not really. I think the reporter decided to choose a side and made the story back that opinion up. Like the fucking cunts in the above video who have no place reporting anything. You can tell because they were the ones called on to cover the poop and pee story. You can also tell because at the first sign of trouble they called their editor to send police backup. You fucking pussies. Woodward and Bernstein are spinning in their graves. (They’re dead, right?)
Republicans shouldn’t sit and watch Fox just to cheer them on. Democrats shouldn’t do the same with CNN. Why is the Daily Show so popular? Yes, it’s biased, but it also covers both sides of the story more often than not. And stoners like it too. But telling people what they want to hear has suddenly become the easy way to get viewers which is where you get ads and a paycheck. So we’ll focus on Obama’s birth certificate and Cain’s sexual past because we’ve all chosen sides and God (gods) dammit my side better win.
It’s a little bit of working for a corporation. But I really don’t think reporters get calls that say, “Here’s your story and here’s your stance, don’t let us down.” I think they know what brings in the bread and are more than happy to err on the side of money. These bitches in the video hate the protests. You can hear it in their tone. You can tell by the way they’re interrogating those dirty worthless pot heads like cops instead of reporters. That woman wants to be on television. She doesn’t give a fuck about reporting events.
